Monk is an AI-native accounts receivable platform for B2B companies.
The AR stack is broken. Finance teams still chase payments with spreadsheets, email threads, and software that was old a decade ago. We think this is one of the largest, most ignored problems in B2B software. Trillions of dollars sit in outstanding invoices, and the tooling to move it is stuck in the past. We're rebuilding it with AI, speed, and real craftsmanship.
We're already doing this for over $1Bn of accounts receivable, and backed by Footwork, Acrew and Better Tomorrow Ventures. We're early, the upside is enormous, and the hardest work is still ahead of us.
The role
We're looking for a backend engineer to join us in person in Flatiron, NYC. You'll own the foundational systems everything else runs on: the data layer, the integrations, the AI execution environment, and the infrastructure that has to be right every time money moves. We don't care about your education, age, or past titles. We care about one thing: whether you can build systems that scale, stay up, and get faster as we grow.
Problems you'll work on
How do you make AI agents production-grade when the output is money? Most agent systems can afford to be wrong. Ours can't. What does the execution environment, the guardrails, and the verification layer look like when a mistake is a misapplied payment?
How do you reconcile financial data across dozens of customer environments that all disagree? Different ERPs, different schemas, different edge cases and failure modes, all of it has to normalize into one trustworthy source of truth.
How do you build an integration layer across ERPs, payment processors, banks, and accounting systems that stays up when any one of them goes down?
How do you bake SOC 2, encryption, access controls, and audit logging into the system from day one? We need compliance to be a property of the architecture, not a thing bolted on later?
How do you make all of this debuggable so an engineer can understand any failure in minutes, not hours?
What you'll own
The backend platform Monk runs on, its architecture, its reliability, and its technical bar
The integration layer across ERPs, payment processors, banks, and accounting systems
Data pipelines that ingest, normalize, and reconcile financial data across every customer environment
System reliability end to end: monitoring, alerting, incident response, and the operational rigor that means customers never notice when something goes wrong
Security and compliance infrastructure, built into the system rather than added after the fact
Who you are
4+ years building and operating production backend systems. You've built them, broken them, and scaled them yourself
A T-shaped engineer: deep in at least one area, broad enough to push the rest forward, and you do it in TypeScript/Node
Strong with our stack and able to go deep where it counts: Postgres, AWS, data pipelines, observability
You understand the tradeoffs you're making and you know when something has to be rebuilt instead of patched
AI-native, not AI-dependent. You move fast with it and you know exactly when not to use it
An owner. You don't file tickets about infrastructure problems. You fix them, and then make sure they can't happen again
Excited to build in person in Flatiron, NYC
Bonus if you
Built or operated fintech or payments systems
Built data processing or streaming services at scale
Why join
A broken market and a real shot at owning it. AR is huge, ignored, and ready to be rebuilt. We're early and the surface area is enormous
Real ownership. No spec handoffs. You'll own systems end to end and watch real customers depend on your work every day
A team that's all in. Motivated teammates who ship fast and hold a high bar
Experienced founders that have exited before with real traction and happy customers
Competitive salary, meaningful equity, full medical/dental and an office dinner stipend
