About the Role:
AngelList is hiring a Product Counsel to sit at the intersection of law, product, and private markets innovation. Legal architecture isn't a constraint here — it's a competitive advantage.
You'll be embedded across product, engineering, and business teams, working on tightly regulated, zero-margin-for-error infrastructure: fund formation, banking infrastructure, investor onboarding, capital calls, and data systems. You'll help shape the regulatory playbook for the next generation of private markets. This role reports directly to the General Counsel of Product.
Most legal teams at financial companies are built to say no. Ours is built to find the yes — and then build the structure that makes it safe, scalable, and replicable. If you're energized by complexity, frustrated by boilerplate, and want your legal work to directly shape products used by thousands of GPs, LPs, and founders, this is the role.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as embedded counsel to product teams across the full lifecycle—development, launch, scale, and maintenance.
- Partner on product design and risk management for both new and existing infrastructure, including Meridian and more.
- Analyze and advise on regulatory implications across securities laws, privacy frameworks, and compliance regimes (e.g., 33 Act, 34 Act, ICA, IAA, GDPR, CCPA).
- Draft, review, and evolve foundational legal documents for fund products and investor tools.
- Design scalable legal processes that enable product velocity without compromising compliance.
- Collaborate with compliance, BD, engineering, and marketing to align legal strategy with business goals.
- Train internal teams on legal implications of product decisions and evolving regulatory standards.
- Advise on and draft bank partnership agreements, including deposit account agreements, custodial arrangements, and banking-as-a-service frameworks with partner financial institutions.
- Serve as legal point of contact on banking infrastructure matters — including wire processing, account structures, and payment flows — in coordination with banking partners and internal finance/ops teams.
- Monitor and advise on regulatory developments affecting banking partner relationships, including BSA/AML obligations, OCC guidance, and evolving BaaS regulatory scrutiny from federal and state banking regulators.
- Ensure contractual and operational alignment between AngelList's product obligations and the compliance requirements flowing from its banking infrastructure partners.
What We're Looking For
- JD from a top-tier law school and active bar membership in good standing.
- 6–10 years of legal experience with meaningful exposure to fintech, venture capital, or SaaS platforms; experience with bank partnership structures, BaaS agreements, or payment infrastructure legal frameworks is a strong plus.
- Expertise in product counseling with a working knowledge of securities law, privacy, and data.
- Demonstrated ability to own complex initiatives independently while collaborating cross-functionally.
- Comfortable navigating legal ambiguity in fast-moving, zero-mistake product environments.
- Strong communication skills—able to translate complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
- High output. Clear thinker. Strong point of view. Values-aligned.
